What is LASIK Eye Surgery?
LASIK; It is the name of an operation in which visual defects such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are removed with a special laser called excimer laser. With this laser, the cornea layer in the outermost part of the eye is reshaped and the light is focused on the retina.
Who is this for?
One of the most important inventions of the century, LASIK treatment may not be suitable for every eye. First of all, people who want to have this treatment must have completed the age of 18. Your eye number should no longer progress. Apart from these basic features, the way to understand whether your eyes are suitable for this treatment is to have a detailed eye examination. This examination is especially aimed at examining the corneal layer where the laser will be applied and includes non-routine examinations such as eye surface maps and corneal thickness measurement.
How does it work?
LASIK treatment should be done in the laser treatment room and under sterile conditions. The operation is performed with anesthesia provided with eye drops. General anesthesia or needle anesthesia is not used. A retractor is placed under the eyelids to prevent blinking during the treatment. A special device called a microkeratome is placed in the eye to flatten the corneal layer and lift a valve called a flap from the eye surface. At this time, there is a slight pressure sensation in the eye. After flap removal, laser application is started. During this process, your doctor will ask you to follow a flashing light. In this way, Laser rays reshape your corneal layer and treat the refractive error in the eye, then the flap is covered back to its former place and antibiotic drops are applied to the eye. This treatment process, which takes a few minutes, is completely painless.
What eye diseases can be fixed with LASIK?
Myopia is the most common of the eye defects. However, today, not only myopia, but also myopic astigmatism, hyperopia, hyperopia astigmatism and mixed astigmatism are treated with LASIK.
What should be considered after LASIK Eye Surgery?
There may be slight stinging, watering and sensitivity to light for 1-2 hours after the LASIK operation. For this reason, it is recommended to wear sunglasses for a while after the treatment and to use the eye-drops regularly. Resting or sleeping with the eyes closed for a few hours after the treatment accelerates the recovery. The next morning, you can continue your normal life without glasses.
Is LASIK treatment safe?
LASIK treatment has been around for over twenty years and is very reliable. This operation, which is one of the most applied surgical treatments in Turkey and in the world, provides successful results when performed on appropriate people.
What are the advantages of LASIK?
· LASIK is a method that has no alternative, especially in high-grade eye defects. Myopia up to -14, myopic astigmatism up to -4.0 or mixed astigmatism up to 4, hyperopia up to +6 and hyperopia astigmatism up to +6 can be treated.
· Pain is not felt during and after the surgery. No needles, narcosis, etc. are required for the procedure. The process takes a few minutes.
· Both eyes of the patient can be operated together. Eyes are not closed. The patient can go home on foot. He can do any work the next day (non-dirty).
· The haze that causes cloudy vision does not develop.
What are the disadvantages of LASIK?
· It is a more difficult surgery. Requires additional equipment and sterile environment.
· Although there are complications such as valve rupture and loss, valve fragmentation, very thin valve, very thick valve, foreign body under the valve, and irregular astigmatism, most of them can be eliminated without causing a serious deterioration in visual acuity.
