What is Gastric Plication Surgery?

Surgical intervention, commonly known as Gastric Plication or Gastric Folding/Reducing surgery, is a weight loss method. It is also referred to by names such as Vertical sleeve gastric plication, gastric sleeve plication.

How is Gastric Plication operation performed?

Gastric plication process is performed by simply folding the stomach on itself, without any cutting in the stomach area, thanks to the developing laparoscopic technologies. Since the stomach is not cut or removed during this operation, there is no damage to the stomach, it can be restored at any time. During the surgery, approximately 50% of the stomach is folded on itself and sutured and the reduction process is applied. The stomach, which folds on itself, is taken inward. Since the operation is performed laparoscopically, the duration of the operation and hospital stay are very short compared to other bariatric surgery methods. The operation takes about an hour and a half. The patient can be discharged the next day of the procedure. After the operation, the patient is fed with liquid foods for two weeks, and then he can switch to a normal diet.

In gastric plication surgery, only the stomach volume is reduced. Thanks to the shrinking stomach volume, the patient eats less food. As in other obesity surgeries, materials such as balloons or bands are not placed in the stomach. In this way, problems such as nausea and vomiting do not occur due to these materials. At the same time, since foreign bodies are not used, vital risks do not occur to the patient.

What are the advantages of Gastric Plication Surgery?

The surgery is done laparoscopically.

The operation is very easy and does not require materials.

It is an economical operation.

The transition to normal nutrition can begin after 2 weeks of liquid food consumption.

Patients can be discharged after 1 day of hospitalization.

It is a reversible surgery as no stitches or parts are removed during the operation.

As in gastric band or gastric balloon operations, no foreign body is inserted into the stomach. In this way, uncomfortable conditions such as nausea and vomiting do not occur in patients. Health problems that foreign bodies may cause in some patients are not experienced in Gastric Plication treatment.

What are the disadvantages of Gastric Plication Surgery?

After this procedure, enlargement and growth can be observed in the remaining stomach part over time. This is very important because, unfortunately, only 50% of the stomach is folded in many gastric plication (gastric folding) surgeries applied as a weight loss method, and over time, re-growth and enlargement of the stomach tissue is observed.
